Probate Courts of Texas
In the state of Texas, the government granted jurisdiction over probate and mental health matters to a designated court in each county. In ten counties, separate courts were formed to handle these matters, called the Statutory Probate Courts. There can be found in 16 probate courts with 16 respective probate judges. If a separate probate court was not created, then many counties give jurisdiction to the county courts to hear probate cases. These courts also have authority to provide a ruling in Class A and Class B misdemeanor cases. All county courts have joint jurisdiction with the district court of the county for domestic cases. Usually, district courts hear felony cases, divorce cases, and highly controversial civil cases, but in some cases they will take probate cases as well.
